"He who does not obey the Son shall not see
life, the wrath of God rests upon him." (John
3:36)
Explicit commands of the Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount
Chapter 6 of Matthew
9. "Beware of practicing your righteousness before men, to be
noticed by them, if you do you shall not receive a reward from your heavenly
Father." (Mt 6:1)
Before men:
"How can
you believe when you seek glory from man instead of from God?" (John
5:44)
10. "When you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your
right hand is doing, so that your alms may be in secret; and your Father who
sees in secret will reward you." (Mt 6:3-4)
Alms:
"Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that
do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no
thief approaches and no moth destroys." (Luke 12:33)
11. "When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to
your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward
you." (Mt 6:6)
Pray:
After he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to
pray. (Mt 14:23)
12. "When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your
fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your
Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Mt 6:17-18)
Fast:
They said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and
so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." Jesus replied,
"Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? The days
will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will
fast in those days." (Luke 5:33-35)
13. "Do not lay up for yourselves wealth on earth, where moth and
rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves
wealth in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not
break in and steal." (Mt 6:19-20)
Wealth:
"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the
other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot
serve God and wealth." (Mt 6:24)
"Sell your possessions, and give alms; provide yourselves with purses that
do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no
thief approaches and no moth destroys." (Luke 12:33)
"No one can be my disciple unless he parts with [apotassomai] all of his
possessions [huparchonta]." (Luke
14:33)
He considered abuse suffered for the Christ greater wealth than the
treasures of Egypt, for he looked to the reward. (Heb 11:26)
All who believed were together and had all things in common; and they sold
their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need. (Acts
2:44-45)
Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no
one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had
everything in common... There was not a needy person among them, for as many
as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of
what was sold and laid it at the apostles’ feet; and distribution was made
to each as any had need. (Acts 4:32-35)
14. "I command you not to be anxious about your life, what you
shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on." (Mt
6:25)
Anxious:
"I say to you that unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter
the kingdom of heaven." (Mt 18:3)
15. "Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things shall be yours as well." (Mt 6:33)
Seek:
Peter said to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." Jesus
said, "Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters
or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will
not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters
and mothers and children and lands, along with persecutions, and in the age to come
eternal life." (Mk 10:28-30)
"If you love me, you will obey my commands." (John
14:15)
